  • Construction Updates

    Construction Updates

“There’s so much good stuff happening! It’s actually really fun to be at this phase because we’ve been fundraising for a year and a half, and—boom—things are suddenly happening!” Leanne Halma, HC’s Director of Advancement said. A quick tour of all that is going on:

    • The HCHS north parking lot is completely revamped and redesigned, after being taken down to the dirt and rebuilt from the subground up. Since it was in such bad shape, a simple retarring wouldn’t have worked, and this parking lot should now last the next 40-some years! For visibility and safety, car parking rows now run north/south instead of the previous east/west, and there is a new central walkway. Forest School parents have their own parking section separated from high school student drivers. We are incredibly grateful to so many local businesses—including Hoekstra Electric, Evergreen Sprinkling, Brewer’s City Dock, Connan, GDK Construction, Proline Concrete, and Integrity Landscaping—who all helped make this parking lot rebuild affordable through their reduced and even free labor!
    • One bonus of the HCHS parking lot renovation was our ability to recycle the asphalt: The crushed asphalt was repurposed into extra parking areas for the HCHS Transportation Department, affectionately known as “the Bus Barn.” Parking spaces for the buses almost doubled, so it’s much easier to back in and turn around!
    • Pine Ridge’s parking lot is repaved so there are no more pot holes!
    • It has been exciting to watch South Side Elementary’s deconstruction this summer, as part of its 1.5 year long renovation—with walls, ceilings, and playgrounds all removed to open spaces and move rooms, sledding hills, and front entrances! We look forward to watching the construction crews put all the pieces back together over the next year+, hopefully by October 2027, if all goes as planned!
    • Major landscaping renovations and classroom improvements happened at Cedar Creek, Forest School’s new Young 5s classroom: Fencing was installed around the two acres of forest around the building, walls were removed to expand classroom space, bathrooms renovated, and the garage has become a comfortable mudroom and entrance. Major thanks to Integrity Landscaping and Plaggemars Construction for their talented work and time on this project!
    • Last year, the office of the Forest School principal, Miska Rynsburger ’92, was basically her car. Which can complicate things a bit when parents want to talk to her—then they used a log outside! Plus Forest School staff have had to run to the Middle School office to make copies and printouts, while Forest School ESS students met in a Middle School classroom, when HCMS is already overflowing with students! All that will be solved soon with the new building going up near the Forest School classrooms—it will be a principal office, ESS classroom, and teacher workroom all in one! We can all watch it get finalized over the next few months.
    • Holland Christian signs are popping up, labeling the tennis courts, admin office, front of the schools. Plus we’ve installed new flags throughout the high school campus celebrating our 125 year anniversary! We’re grateful to the donors who helped us freshen up our campus signage as well!
    • Finally—we bought a house! We purchased a five bedroom home, 444 W. 32nd St., from Ottawa County, so HC now owns all of the property on the corner of Ottawa and 32nd, from HCMS to the HC Transportation Garage! Besides ensuring that HC will have room to expand as needed in the future, we hope to rent this spacious home to new staff at an affordable rate.

All of these campus improvements could not have happened without the incredible support to our Faithfully Forward Campaign—$15 million altogether. But we’re not finished yet! You can donate and read more about our Faithfully Forward Fundraising Campaign, and all that we anticipate renovating once we reach the full $22.5 million goal at dev.hollandchristian.org/faithfully-forward/.

    Medical forms & immunization info

The State of Michigan requires that your child(ren) be immunized for enrollment at Holland Christian Schools, and every year we are required by the State to report each student that we have enrolled in preschool, kindergarten, seventh grade, and all those who are new to our district along with their immunization records. This pdf lists the required childhood immunization guidelines set by the State of Michigan.

If you intend to complete a non-medical immunization waiver to the State of Michigan immunization policy, you must contact your local county health department to schedule an appointment to speak with a health educator, complete the waiver process, and then either submit the original certified waiver to the school office, or have them electronically send it to your school. A new medical waiver is required each year that your child would report vaccinations–which is in preschool, kindergarten, 7th grade, and when transfering to HC from a different school district. Therefore: If your child with a waiver is returning to Holland Christian for the  26-27 school year and moving from:

    • 3s preschool to 4s preschool: The current waiver on file is good unless you have chosen to complete a vaccine series during the year that was waived on the waiver.
    • 3s/4s preschool to Young 5s: New waiver needed; please schedule an appointment with your county health department.
    • 4s preschool to kindergarten: New waiver needed; schedule an appointment at your county health department.
    • Young 5s to Kindergarten: Current waiver on file is good unless you have chosen to complete a vaccine series during the year that was waived on the waiver
    • 6th to 7th grade: New waiver needed; please schedule an appointment with your county health department.

Written evidence that your child’s immunizations are current, or a certified waiver must be received before the start of the school year by law, and is due by or on August 8, 2026 to allow for proper processing before the first day of classes. (If you’ve already missed this date, please get it in asap!)

Please reach out to your school’s secretary if you have any questions. We greatly appreciate your efforts taking care of these immunizations before schools starts, as it is a top priority to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all students!

    Help Us Celebrate 125 Years!

It’s our anniversary!! And not just any anniversary—Holland Christian Schools is celebrating 125 years this school year!

Since 1901, generations of HC students have learned, grown, and been shaped by a shared mission: equipping minds and nurturing hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ. As we look back with great gratitude and forward with confidence in Christ, we invite you to reflect with us on God’s love and faithfulness over Holland Christian’s 125 years.

We look forward to celebrating with you in a variety of ways throughout the school year–starting with our new logo for the year!

There’s so much to celebrate, but let’s be honest—a 125th anniversary party wouldn’t be complete without gifts! We invite you to join us by investing in HC’s mission through four important giving opportunities:

    Tuition Grant Fund

The Tuition Grant Fund ensures Christian education remains accessible to more families. Gifts to the Tuition Grant Fund help remove financial barriers and open doors for students to experience an education centered on Christ. To read more about our Tuition Grant Fund and all that goes into it, please visit our Tuition Grant Fund page.

  • Not One, but TWO Huge Property Donations!

Not One, but TWO Huge Property Donations!

Early last September, shortly after being named HC’s interim Head of Schools, Jeff Pett was visiting each Holland Christian campus to better understand their focus for the school year. His last stop was Forest School at Sassafras Ridge. He popped in unannounced, hoping to observe how the classrooms in the house were functioning, and to see the second grade students and their teachers in action. But when he knocked on the door there was silence. The rooms were completely vacant. He had picked a bad time, he thought.

“Then—faintly, I heard voices of children somewhere out in the woods behind the house. Lots of laughter!” Jeff recalled. “I just followed my ears and found that both classes of second graders were starting a hike out to the far west end of the property. I wasn’t exactly prepared for hiking in my dress pants and shoes, but who could resist this opportunity?! The kids marched two-by-two through the woods, passed ponds and creeks, with teachers interspersed amongst them.

“The kids were well behaved and obviously excited. It wasn’t a short hike! When we finally stopped we were in a dune-type sandy area. Another beautiful spot! The kids dropped their backpacks and circled up around the teachers eagerly awaiting instructions. This day was the day they would learn how to put up their [reading] hammocks. The teachers did a great job and as the students spread out and were finding their ideal hammock hanging spots, I turned and made my way back to the house and my car.”

Four years ago Holland Christian was gifted 10 acres of land with a house on it southwest of the main HC campus—what we now know and love as Sassafras Ridge—while also being allowed to use the surrounding 50+ acres of wild property. “It is an amazing piece of property and our second graders in Forest School are absolutely loving having school out there,” Jeff added.

However, with a growing Forest School program, space-locked Forest School cabins on HC’s campus, and the whole preK-12th grades becoming more proficient in outdoor immersed education, Holland Christian could actually use more wild space. An HC admin team explored how to best help Forest School continue to grow and thrive, including possible additional space at Sassafras Ridge to perhaps “create a center a bit further off the road with maybe four cabins and some parking and a place for buses to turn around,” Jeff said.

Underlying this interest is one thing we’ve learned over the last seven years of Forest School: that there is a difference between what kind of outdoor learning kids do. We are seeing more benefits in what is being called “nature immersion learning” vs simply learning outside—though that is also beneficial. We’re discovering that kids learn best by exploring freely, seeing God at work in a myriad of ways by uncovering bugs and buds and tree bark, measuring and climbing and identifying trees, tapping for maple syrup, making fires and shelters, constructing dams in the creeks.

So after a significant conversation and investigation, a donor who wishes to remain anonymous generously decided to gift the entire 45+ surrounding acreage to Holland Christian Schools to continue to promote and foster our outdoor learning programs!

So after a significant conversation and investigation, a donor who wishes to remain anonymous generously decided to gift the entire 45+ surrounding acreage to Holland Christian Schools to continue to promote and foster our outdoor learning programs!

“With more land, Forest School can offer longer, more immersive learning experiences across multiple habitats—woodlands, meadows, and dune lands—allowing children to return to the same spaces over time and develop a sense of belonging, stewardship, and wonder,” Miska Rynsburger, Forest School principal and outdoor coach, emailed. “The land creates room for unhurried learning, deeper curiosity, and seasonal rhythms that are foundational to how young children learn best.”

So when you’re given over 45+ acres to allow your over 1600 students access to do that kind of learning, it gets our outdoor education geeks over the moon over here! And super excited about how our students can best learn and care for the property. Besides the fact that it is a beautiful piece of God’s creation:

“I’ve had the opportunity to be out on this property a number of times over the years and have marveled at its beauty, its peaceful open areas around small lakes, and its rolling hills through the forest. It really is a natural wonderland!” Jeff Pett remarked. “For us to now own over 55+ acres here is an amazing gift! The lessons that can be planned for the students in so many possible locations over the next 50 years are countless.”

“Sassafras Ridge is a shared gift for the entire Holland Christian community, preschool through high school,” Miska continued. “While Forest School will use the property most frequently, students across all grades will engage in learning experiences connected to science, social studies, art, physical education, service learning, and spiritual formation.

We are so grateful for the donor’s generosity and vision for the future of Holland Christian Forest School! Now we can dream big and start the planning process to properly integrate this new asset into our long range plans for Forest School! We could not be more excited!

Add to all this a second extremely generous anonymous donation that allowed Holland Christian to purchase a house and surrounding 1.77 acres formerly known as the “Wolters House” from Laketown Township in December. Holland Christian had previously leased the house with a creek in its front yard and an acre of largely undeveloped woods abutting the Wolters Woods township park, from the township the 23-24 school year to use as an outdoor education hub. We are thrilled to now own the property ourselves, which we are affectionately calling “Cedar Creek”!

Renovations in the yard and in the house interior have already begun in order to accommodate our new Forest School Young Fives program that HC is starting with the continued partnership of the Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC). With the property’s proximity to our main HC campus, preexisting outbuildings that can house bikes, a creek running nearby, and a large variety of trees, plants and animals to discover on the property you can just imagine how our outdoor education brains are turning!

The land creates room for unhurried learning, deeper curiosity, and seasonal rhythms that are foundational to how children learn best.”

    Miska Rynsburger
