    Rose Park Newsletter: November 2024

    Dear Rose Park Families,

You may have read a bit about our Parent University evening of learning and dialogue. We’ve been researching and learning a good deal about both the blessing and the curse that technology has introduced into our lives over the past decade. Mr. John Barkel, principal at Iroquois in Grand Rapids Christian, Mrs. Tricia Kiepert, principal at Hudsonville Christian and Mrs. Betsy Koop, principal at Zeeland Christian and I have developed a friendship in the work of serving schools over the years. Collectively we’ve served teachers, staff and communities for long enough to have noticed a change in communication patterns. There is a trend in our nation that shows the duration of an average teacher’s career is much shorter than in years past. We want to buck this trend in our schools and create a warm community for teachers to flourish. When a teacher grows in his or her craft, children and families and the school benefits.

We believe you, our parents, can help in support of our teachers and it involves the change digital communication has introduced into the role and responsibilities our teachers hold. Our teachers deeply love their students. They desire to serve God with their best by loving and skillfully growing the children God has placed in their lives. But even the most passionate servant needs the God-ordained Sabbath in life to restore and continue to serve with their best. As their principal, I have made a commitment to our staff to refrain from messaging in the evening hours and on weekends as much as possible. My hope is teachers can use after-school time to plan, investigate data from the classroom, collaborate, research and rest with their family! Could you help in this regard as well? If you have logistical questions, feel free to message our office at rp@hollandchristian.org. We’ll be happy to assist you. If you have wonders, needs or feedback for your teacher, could you also send messages to our teachers during business hours? Together, we can give our teachers all-important margins and allow them to flourish with our children.

    With thanks,

    Miska

We are also enjoying the rhythms of the school day that children begin to take comfort and begin to trust. Security

Our staff at HC is grateful for the consultative guidance of our local law enforcements in keeping our facilities safe. This year our staff has been trained in upgraded language and practices. You will notice a few upgrades when you enter the building as well:

    • Our “doorbell buzzer” has two-way speaking capability. When you ring the doorbell of door A, you will be asked to identify yourself and your needs at school. This is not meant to feel restrictive. This will help our new office staff become familiar with our community and keep our building secure.
    • Our door will unlock every morning to welcome children at 7:55am. Prior to 7:55am we do not have adequate supervision to support children throughout the building. At 7:55am our doors will unlock, children may enter and we have several staff members supervising our beautiful playground!
    • When you do enter the building during school hours, please continue to keep the habit of checking in at the office. We’ll be happy to welcome you, thank you for coming, and share a name tag with you!

Thank you for helping to keep our building safe!

    Walkathon

What is Walkathon? Walkathon is an HC-wide fundraiser where elementary students walk to raise money for their school. The funds raised by Rose Park students go directly to Rose Park needs. These needs include classroom supplies, educational outings, and other resources. Last year’s donations helped contribute to our barn, greenhouse and playscape. They provided bookshelves for multiple classrooms, adventuring supplies and teacher appreciation and support. Parents are welcome to watch the event from the bleachers, while the track is reserved for teachers and students.

Walkathon forms will be sent home in your child’s backpack soon and are due back by Wednesday, September 18. The Walkathon event will take place at 1:00 on Wednesday, September 25. Thank you for helping to keep Rose Park thriving!

    Rose Park Newsletter: August 2024

    Dear Rose Park Friends,

It is with loads of joy and fanfare that we say “welcome back to school”! Well, almost. 🙂 Our faculty and staff have been busy preparing, relaxing and praying in advance of this coming school year and for your child. The launching of a new school year brings hope, excitement and always just a good bit of nerves. We pray God blesses each dear child and family with a smooth transition from home to school. We are blessed to be called to help you in that process. Please see the dates and details below as we walk together toward the first day of school!

Our theme this year is Seek First! My prayer is as we unpack this challenge together, we might be encouraged to peel away all that causes divides and fissures between us in life this side of heaven. May we Seek First the Kingdom of God. All the rest that might otherwise pull at our attentions, emotions and distraction, will fall away. Our identity is in Christ and Christ alone. Join us in the work of seeking First the Kingdom of God and building our lives on Him.

    Yours in partnership,

    Katelyn & Miska

    Enrollment/Medical Paperwork 24-25

All students entering preschool, kindergarten, and new transfers have a variety of paperwork that needs to be filled out and turned in by August 1, 2024!

If you have any questions, please email us!

    Waiver Information:

If your child is a new student coming to HC from a different school district, your old waiver is invalid and you will need to schedule an appointment.

If your child with a waiver is returning to Holland Christian for the 24-25 school year and moving from:

    PowerSchool

PowerSchool is our student information database. You will want to bookmark this site! There is also an app available for PowerSchool for your phone which can be very helpful. If there is a change in your phone number or address any time during the school year, it is important that we are informed right away. Parents can update their information on PowerSchool directly on the Demographics Change tab. This assures up-to-date contact information for your child.

You must update your demographic information in PowerSchool each fall with your latest and most accurate contact information. Simply log in, then either an “update demographic screen” will automatically pop up, or simply click the “change demographics” button on the left of the screen. This information is necessary for field trip participation, emergency response and treatment, student photo permission, and for the office to easily be able to contact a parent or guardian as needed or desired. When listing your child’s emergency contacts, please be sure to list two contacts other than yourself.

Rose Park Newsletter – June 2024

    Dear Rose Park Friends,

    Faith Like A Child.

What a wonderful theme we have been able to discuss this year in our classrooms, chapels, outdoor learning spaces and on our field trips. Parents, we have loved and prayed over, lost sleep about and celebrated with, each of your children this year. As we ponder our theme we have also seen each of your students be teachers as they put their faith on display for the world to see. Your precious children. All 387 of them have impacted us deeply as we watch them live into childlike faith. We pray that their tender roots sown into Jesus’ care will grow deeply and remain strong for their lifetime. These dear ones in turn bring us the joy of Christ and inspire an authentic and true faith in our good, good Father. Your children have been imprinted our hearts. Whether they return to our care at Rose Park next year or God’s design for their lives takes them elsewhere, they will be held forever in our hearts. Thank you for entrusting them to the care of the loving staff at Rose Park!

God’s blessings, safety and joy-filled memories be yours this summer!

Rose Park Newsletter – May 2024

    Dear Rose Park Friends,

Our corner of the world in West Michigan is exploding with new life and we’re blessed to be in the midst of all this bounty in Creation. When we slow our busyness and join children in viewing our world from their perspective, the intricacies of the mini miracles all around us abound. Children are experts at wondering when they’re gifted with time to wander. I encourage you to wander in creation this spring with your child. Listen to their questions. Absorb their enthusiasm. Notice the world as they see it. Allow God to speak to your heart and to your child’s heart by simply enjoying his presence and each other in the midst of springtime beauty.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
    or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the LORD has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature
and the breath of all mankind.”

    Job 12: 7-10

    Yours in Christ’s service,

    Katelyn and Miska

As we move into Spring there is so much to look forward to! The changing of seasons, warmer days, and much to anticipate as we end a wonderful school year! We also look forward to Easter, as we have just walked a season of Lent and waiting. This year we’re having our first All-School Eastertide Celebration! Most of us think of Easter as a single day, but did you know that many Christians around the world celebrate Jesus’ victory over death for an entire season? This is called Eastertide!  We will gather to proclaim that JESUS IS ALIVE, and we have new life in Him! Be sure to ask your child to share all about the celebration in the coming weeks!

All warmth and joy be yours,

    Katelyn & Miska

Can learning be meaningful AND fun?!? With these kids, we wouldn’t have it any other way!

    Thank You

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with teachers for conferences. What a wonderful time of celebrating all the growth that has already happened this year!

Also, many thanks to the Parent Board and parents who signed up to provide meals for teachers during conferences. The meals were delicious, and the teachers enjoyed gathering around the table together without having to worry about packing extra meals in the midst of conferences. Your generosity is SO appreciated!

Get ready! New books to encourage your student’s love for reading are coming April 24-26 from 11 am – 4 pm at the Intersection in Rose Park!

Every dollar you spend will benefit our school library directly! This is our only fundraiser to add new books to the library. Last year our library gained 300 new books because of this fundraiser! Sign up begins April 3 on the Book Fair Homepage. Rose Park Newsletter: March 2024

    Dear Rose Park Friends,
The early spring temperatures have certainly made for some remarkably beautiful days to enjoy creation this winter. As we move through seasons throughout our year in Michigan, we’re always reminded that God is faithful through all of the fickle in our world. Temperatures fluctuate up and down and winds whip all about, yet our God is faithful and good. Generation after generation. As we begin to see the sap flowing in our maples and anticipate the arrival of buds, tangible experiences abound for our children to live into the words they have committed to memory: “For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.” Psalm 100:5.

All warmth and joy be yours,

    Katelyn & Miska

    Rose Park Newsletter: January 2024

It’s nearly time to ring in the new year! I always find the close of one year and the dawning of the new to be a natural time to thank God for faithfully walking beside us day by day both in the past and forevermore. Through the hard and through the joys, God is good. As a new year dawns, we lay all of our hopes and all of our purpose at God’s feet. We pray that God would continue to hold you and your dear ones close in the new year.

As we look to the new year our team also begins planning for the 2024-2025 school year. We will soon be in the process of creating class lists for the 2024-2025 school year. Many staff members put a great deal of effort into creating balanced lists for the upcoming school year. Children are paired with teachers and friends in an environment that allows for new relationships to form and flourish. Our priority is each child would be placed in the best learning environment to meet their developing needs. Among other criteria we weigh the following when carefully creating a new class community:

    • Academic progress/needs
    • Relational values/needs with teachers’ style
    • Behavioral balance
    • Friend balance/new friends

We deeply value your partnership and input but, in order to create a balanced class community, we are not able to accept teacher requests. We commit to give our best to provide each child with a healthy, balanced home away from home and thank you for your understanding.

    Yours in Christ’s service,

    Miska and Katelyn

    Swimming Lessons

Our Holland Aquatic Center is providing swim lessons for us again this year! I recognize this program is a little uncomfortable for some children and families especially if it’s new and unfamiliar to you. Because our children are blessed to be raised in Michigan, surrounded by bodies of water, we believe this safety instruction is a blessing that we pray they will never need but feel responsible to equip them. If you find yourself pondering over the “why” of lessons, please take a listen to HC mom Jenny White on the why for swim safety. HCAC Swim School welcome video will help you understand a bit about the logistics. Our 1st-4th graders will be bused to the pool each day the weeks of February 5-February 16.

    • 9-10am: 1st Grade
    • 10-11am: 2nd Grade
    • 11am-12pm: 4th Grade
    • 12:35-1:35pm: 3rd Grade

RP Skating Party (RP students only due to capacity limits)

    Jan 9, 2024, 6-8:00pm

    • $10 per every child and skating adult paid individually upon entry. Skate rentals are free for this event. Kids are welcome to bring their own skates if they wish, but not required as rentals are included.
    • $5 rental each ‘Skate Mate’, we have about 40, on a first come first serve basis.
    • The cafe will be open for students/families to purchase for themselves.

    Rose Park Lost and Found

The weather is changing and our Lost and Found is growing! Please take a minute to look our Lost and Found photo Album to see if any of these items belong to your student. Feel free to email Katie or Suzanne to claim your items and we will make sure to get it in your student’s backpack. These items will be donated soon.

Also, please make sure to bring your child’s snow stuff to school every day or leave an extra set at school. In Michigan, the weather can change quickly and we want to make sure your child is warm and comfortable in their outdoor play! Our office has a limited supply of items. If your child borrows an item, we will send it home to be washed and returned for other students to use. We are always looking for extra gloves to add to our supply!

    Discovery Night at Rose Park

Do you or any of your friends or extended family have a prospective preschooler or kindergartener? Are you looking into options for the 24-25 school year? We’ll be having our Discovery Night on January 18 from 6-7pm, and we’d love to have you come and explore Rose Park’s preschool and kindergarten programs! Since we prepare individually for each family visiting this Discovery Night, an RSVP for the Discovery Night is required.

If you are unable to make it to Discovery Night, you are still welcome to visit Holland Christian Schools in person and see things in action for yourself. Feel free to schedule a campus tour through by filling out our Inquiry Form. Enrollment for the 24-25 school year begins on February 1, 2024.

    Christmas Break

No school December 25-January 5 for Christmas break!

    Little Maroons Basketball

Little Maroons is a Holland Christian winter basketball opportunity for kindergarten-6th graders to develop in both skill and game play. Grades 5-6 have three clinics before Christmas to prepare for their local 5-6 league run through City of Holland Recreation. Register through Active for the Holland Christian sessions and clinics.
