    Forest School Newsletter: September 2026

    Dear Forest Families,

Thank you for all of your support, prayers, feedback and commitment at the start of this new school year. Together we are grateful for a smooth launch to all that God has in store for us together in 26-27! It is an absolute JOY to have our learning spaces filled with the LIFE your children bring to us! I pray that our relationship continues to be marked in truth, respect, care and love.

Speaking of caring for one another, I have a unique request to share with you again this year as we’re building habits this school year. As a community, we deeply appreciate our teachers and all they do to pour into the lives of our children. It’s a tall task they’re engaged in and they each serve so faithfully. The calling of teaching has changed dramatically in the digital era. You, as parents, and I, as their administrator, can access our teachers’ attention around the clock, seven days a week if we so desire. Teachers do work evenings and weekends. However, a full inbox, particularly on a Sunday, means our dedicated teachers may not be able to celebrate the God-given gift of restoration and rejuvenation on the Sabbath.

My request to you: Could we all commit to messaging our teachers when necessary using the “schedule send” feature when we’re thinking of something or raising a need in the off hours? If we all limit our communication to their working day, utilizing schedule send in the off hours, we’ll be able, together, to allow teachers to enjoy tech-free moments in the evenings and particularly on Sundays. If and when you have an imminent need on a particular topic, would you please message me at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org? I will help as I am able and then, together, we’ll connect with our teacher at the appropriate time.

    All joy and thanksgiving,

    Miska

Many email accounts and text messaging feature the ‘schedule send’ option you see in the lower lefthand corner. Let’s commit together to honoring our teachers’ healthy work/life balance by keeping to their working hours for messages as much as possible. Thank you!
Come visit our Forest for a nice cup of dark (only mildly gritty) coffee in the morning!

Or enjoy a walnut, feather pie!

We’re overjoyed to have our Forest Kids back!

Welcome Walk (current families: check out ALL of our school options for your child!)

At Holland Christian, we believe that choosing a school is about more than academics, it is about finding a community where children are known, loved, and encouraged to grow in faith, wonder, and learning. The Welcome Walk is designed to give families an authentic glimpse into the heart of our school.

Through this interactive experience, families are invited to explore classrooms alongside their children, meet the teachers who will guide and nurture them, and experience the culture that shapes daily life within our school community. As families move through the building/playscape, engage in hands-on activities, and connect with staff, they gain a deeper understanding of our commitment to Christ-centered learning, meaningful relationships, and joyful discovery.

    Forest School Newsletter: August 2026

    Dear Forest Families,

There is something truly special about this season. The trees are full, wildflowers are blooming, birdsong fills the air, and every corner of our Forest is alive with the beauty of God’s creation. As our staff has spent time preparing the cabins, trails, and learning spaces, we have been reminded again and again of God’s abundant goodness.

Yet, as beautiful as our Forest is right now, it is missing its most important part…our children.

The laughter on the trails, curious questions beside the pond, muddy boots, joyful discoveries, and the friendships that make this place feel like home are what truly bring our Forest to life. We cannot wait to welcome each child back to their special place in our Forest family. We have been praying for your children throughout the summer and eagerly anticipate all that God has planned for this new school year.

This year also marks a remarkable milestone for Holland Christian Schools as we celebrate 125 years of God’s faithfulness. What a joy it is to look back with gratitude and see generation after generation of students whose hearts and minds have been shaped for Christ’s Kingdom. Throughout this year, we’ll celebrate this incredible birthday together, rejoicing in the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness across more than a century. How appropriate that our school theme this year is His Love Endures Forever. It is our privilege to walk alongside your family as we help nurture a new generation of children who will know, love, and serve Jesus.

Thank you for entrusting us with your precious children. We are grateful to partner with you and cannot wait to begin another year of wonder, discovery, learning, and growing together in God’s beautiful creation.

Welcome to the Forest and see you soon,

    Miska

    Enrollment/Medical Paperwork 26-27

All students entering kindergarten as well as new transfers have a variety of paperwork that needs to be filled out and turned in as soon as possible! Students will not be allowed to attend their first day unless all paperwork has been turned in!

Please be sure your child is up to date on all immunizations, and if you are pursuing an immunization waiver through your county health department, please call them for an appointment ASAP as appointments fill up quickly, and it needs to be done before attending the first day of school. If you have any questions, please email us!

    Waiver Information:

If your child is a new student coming to HC from a different school district, your old waiver is invalid and you will need to schedule an appointment.

If you have not done this yet, please do so ASAP so it is ready by the first day of school. The necessary form is on our Medical Information & Forms page.

If you have questions, you may also contact Holland Christian’s school nurse, Lindsey Prentice. She will help you set up a plan for the office to assist in administering the medication. Class Lists for 26-27

The 26-27 class lists will be available and sent out via email the beginning of July.

    Welcome Mrs. Wolters!

We are celebrating with Mrs. Sadie Smith at the birth of her sweet son! Mrs. Smith will be returning to teach second grade next year on a part-time basis. She will be job sharing days with Mrs. Mary Wolters. Mrs. Wolters taught and loved our second graders during Mrs. Smith’s maternity leave and we just can’t say good-bye. I’m thrilled to introduce Mrs. Mary Wolters as our new Forest second grade teacher:

My name is Mary Wolters. I grew up in the Finger Lakes region of New York, where I developed a love for nature and the outdoors. I earned my degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood from Roberts Wesleyan College and later completed a Master’s in Reading from Grand Valley State University.

My husband, Jan-Harm, and I have been married since 2003, and we have a son, Josiah, who attends Holland Christian High School. Our family enjoys hiking, kayaking, board games, visiting national parks, and spending time along Lake Michigan with our black Lab, Lexi.

After teaching 5th grade and spending several years at home raising and homeschooling our son, I returned to education through substitute teaching, including at Holland Christian Schools. I feel grateful to be part of a community that points students to Jesus and encourages each child to grow into the person God created them to be.

    26-27 Enrollment & Medical Paperwork

All students entering young 5s, kindergarten, and new transfers need to fill out and turn in a variety of paperwork by August 7, 2026:

    Medication

Any prescription or OTC medication including inhalers and epipens needs a signed form from the doctor before the first day of school. Students may not be in possession of any medication at any time at school. Teachers will carry inhalers and/or epipens along with the appropriate medical forms while off campus. All other medications will remain in a secure location in the cabin or house.

    Non-Medical Exemptions (Formerly Waivers) Information:

If your child is a new student coming to HC from a different school district (HC is IN-DISTRICT with HPS), your old non-medical exemption is invalid and you will need to schedule an appointment. If your child currently has a non-medical exemption and is returning to Holland Christian for the 26-27 school year and moving from:

    • 3s/4s preschool to Young 5s: New non-medical exemption needed; please schedule an appointment
    • 4s preschool to kindergarten or Young Fives: New non-medical exemption needed; schedule an appointment ASAP at your county health department.
    • Young 5s to Kindergarten: Current non-medical exemption on file is good unless you have chosen to complete a vaccine series during the year that was waived on the non-medical exemption.

    Summer Office Hours

    • June 4: The office will be closed in the morning due to an off-site meeting
    • June 5: The office will be open from 9am-2pm to assist parents.
    • August 3: The office will reopen daily from 9am-3pm, and then resume regular office hours when school begins. There will be a few dates TBD for beginning of the school year all-staff off-site meetings, and those dates will be posted on the door once they become available.

    Forest School Newsletter: May 2026

As God begins to wake up seemingly all of creation in springtime, one of our particularly observant students noted something rather profound while digging in the soft soil. She noted that often times, when new life begins, it first goes down into the dirt with lacy tendrils as roots begins to pull nutrition from the earth. We don’t even realize this is taking place below our feet! Life underground gathers hold quietly the dark and gains strength. When God’s timing is right, green shoots burst into the light from below.

“That’s like what happens on hard days when we just need to sit with God to feel all better again.”

“Wow. Yeah. That’s exactly the place we need to go on the hard days to pull strength from God. Thank you for that lesson. I’ll remember this illustration forever.”

God reveals so much to us in creation. Like our fledglings in the faith may we pause. Listen. Pray. Like this little child with innocent love, may our lacy, fragile tendrils of faith forever reach to our Father for strength and life that we too might burst forth giving glory to our Maker.

    Yours in Christ’s service,

    Miska

    Class Lists for 26-27

As we look to the end of this school year, our team also begins planning for the 2026-2027 school year. We will soon be in the process of creating class lists. Many staff members put a great deal of effort into creating balanced lists for the upcoming school year. Children are paired with teachers and friends in an environment that allows for new relationships to form and flourish. Our priority is each child would be placed in the best learning environment to meet their developing needs. Among other criteria we weigh the following when carefully creating a new class community:

    • Academic progress/needs
    • Relational values/needs with teachers’ style
    • Behavioral balance
    • Friend balance/new friends

We deeply value your partnership and input but, in order to create a balanced class community, we are not able to accept teacher requests. We commit to give our best to provide each child with a healthy, balanced home away from home, and thank you for your understanding.

    Dear Forest Friends,

Most of us tend to think of Easter as a single day to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, but did you know that many Christians around the world celebrate Jesus’ victory over death for an entire season? This is called Eastertide—a season we celebrate renewal, as we are reminded that through Christ, all things are being made new.

In our Forest, our students experience this renewal firsthand. As they explore the woods, they witness buds opening, streams flowing, and new life emerging all around them, they bear witness to daily reminders of God’s ongoing work of renewal in His creation.

We are excited to celebrate our third annual All-School Eastertide Celebration this spring. On April 15, we will gather to proclaim that JESUS IS ALIVE and to rejoice in the renewal of life we have in Him. Be sure to ask your child to share all about the celebration.

Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!

    Student Life and Discipleship

As we grow to live more like Jesus, we gain understanding of our Discipleship Practices, the everyday ways our faith takes root and becomes visible in how we learn, relate, and serve. A disciple is someone who follows Jesus, learning from Him and becoming more like Him in heart, mind, and action.

Across our learning spaces, we see these practices come to life in beautiful, age-appropriate ways. Our kindergarteners are beginning as wisdom seekers, asking thoughtful questions, wondering about God’s world, and learning to listen for truth. In first grade, students delight in discovering order in creation, noticing patterns, structure, and beauty as reflections of God’s design. Our second graders help to grow our community through leadership and skill development taking initiative, helping others, and using their gifts to serve.

These are small but meaningful steps in a lifelong journey of discipleship, as our students learn not just about Jesus, but how to walk with Him each day.

    Forest School Newsletter: March 2026

When we read the teachings of our favorite teacher, Jesus, we see a technique very familiar to Forest School: Jesus walked beside his disciples on dusty roads, near water, under open sky. Together they explored life as Jesus told stories and illustrated the grace and love of the Father.

    It is slow.
    It is embodied.
    It is relational.

Our Forest School teachers give their whole heart to loving students, guiding them and developing their gifts. Discipleship involves learning to live like Jesus. Our children are learning to love God, to love others and to love themselves. Thank you for your prayerful, patient support of our class communities and staff.

“I have shifted from pursuing adventures of a lifetime towards a lifetime of just trying to live a little more adventurously every day.” ~Alastair Humphreys

Hospitality, one of the values at Holland Christian, is something children practice long before they can fully name it. We celebrate it when a child invites a friend into play, shares space on a trail, or offers help with quiet care and honesty. At Holland Christian, we define hospitality as receiving and giving grace; interacting with care and candor; building reciprocal relationships with our community, and our Forest provides daily opportunities for children to live this out together. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” In Forest School, children are learning that hospitality begins with noticing others and choosing care and grace.

    All joy and wonder,

Flourishing: what comes to mind when you hear that term? According to Webster’s Dictionary flourishing is defined by vigorous and healthy growth: very active and successful. As parents and teachers, we want each of our unique children to flourish. My mind often considers conditions in order for flourishment to take place. When home, church and school are in concert loving and guiding children, we have conditions that are aligned for a child to flourish in God’s providential care. When our prayer life, consistent Biblical teaching and, particularly in our Forest, exploratory play and spiritual wonder are part of our children’s daily norms, we have conditions that are ripe for each child to flourish in God’s care.

In the forest, flourishing looks like muddy boots and thoughtful questions, careful hands and courageous steps. It looks like children learning to care for the land, for one another, and for themselves. Through unhurried time outdoors, meaningful relationships, and purposeful play, we nurture resilience, creativity, and a growing sense of responsibility.

Above all, flourishing is rooted in belonging–belonging to a community that values each child and belonging in God’s good creation. As we walk, explore, and learn together, we are grateful to partner with you, our families, and with our community churches in guiding children toward lives marked by joy, gratitude, and faithful stewardship.

    Much love and joy,

Preschool and Young Fives Admission Enhancements

HC has enhanced the application process for all currently enrolled 3’s preschool, 4’s preschool and young five students. Starting January 2026, currently enrolled preschool and young five students will no longer be required to re-apply for the following academic school year. Preschool is now a part of HC’s Continuous Enrollment. Instead, they will be asked to fill out a Commitment Countdown form. This Commitment Countdown form is a quick and easy way for currently enrolled preschool and young five families to let HC know what their hopes are for their child’s 26-27 enrollment. Completing it lets Admissions know their intentions, but it does not guarantee placement or availability. The information families share will help HC thoughtfully plan for class sizes, teacher placements, and learning spaces that support every child’s academic, faith, and character growth.

    Enrollment for 26-27

New Student Applications will be open to the public on Monday, February 2, 2026 at 9am.

Note: Continuous enrollment means that once a student is enrolled at HC, they remain enrolled automatically each year until they graduate or formally withdraw. This includes ALL current kindergarteners.

    Swimming Lessons

Our Holland Aquatic Center is providing swim lessons for us again this year! Because our children are blessed to be raised in Michigan, surrounded by bodies of water, we believe this safety instruction is a blessing that we pray they will never need but feel responsible to equip them. If you find yourself pondering over the “why” of swimming lessons, please take a listen to HC mom Jenny White on the why for swim safety. HCAC Swim School welcome video will help you understand a bit about the logistics. Our 1st-2nd graders will be bused to the pool each day the weeks of January 5-16.

    Unplugged Series–We’re Invited!

One of our local partners in education, Outdoor Discovery Center, is hosting a 4-part speaker series featuring nationally-renowned experts who will explore how technology is reshaping our lives. Please see the attached flyer to register for these free opportunities!

    Gadgets for Christmas

Just in case a child receives a smart device or personal tech with connectivity, we want to remind you of our policy to uphold healthy learning spaces throughout HC to the best of our ability.

Personal Technology: Personal Technology is not necessary in a school setting and disrupts the learning environment. Personal Technology includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    • Cell Phones
    • Smartwatches
    • Headphones or Earbuds
    • Personal Laptops
    • MP3-Players
    • Etc. (i.e. Any non-school issued personal technology)

If parents need to communicate with their student, they can send their student an email or call the office and get a note from the office. Personal Technology items are not allowed to be used or visible during the time a student enters school until the final bell rings. If a student needs to use their phone, they must receive direct permission from a staff person to do so.

Student Life and Discipleship (SLD) in the New Year

All of our students learn, practice and are celebrated in the way we learn to do life together. We teach students directly how to contribute to a safe ride on the bus, a worshipful posture during chapel and even how to respectfully hike through creation maintaining a sense of awe while celebrating relationships. When our students return from Christmas break, each class will reteach these norms so our students feel refreshed and renewed in our safe and respectful practices as we enjoy life together.

    Discernment

Discerning God’s beauty, majesty and providential care pops to life as our students spend their days in the Forest. A group of first graders paused mid-hike when they noticed a bird’s call they hadn’t heard before. Instead of rushing on, they whispered and listened. One child reminded the group, “God made that sound!” Another wondered if it’s warning others. This is discernment — the sacred noticing that connects curiosity with reverence.

    Parenting Encouragement

As our children soon head home for break, you may notice both the joy and the challenge of shifting rhythms and routines. This season can be a wonderful opportunity to nurture your child’s growing independence and resilience. We encourage you to take a few minutes to listen to Mike McLeod’s insightful podcast episode, “Raising Resilient Kids with ADHD: 4 Parenting Shifts That Break the Fragility Cycle.” His reflections on executive function growth—helping children plan, regulate, and adapt—apply beautifully to all children learning to navigate big feelings and changing schedules. It’s a timely reminder that growth often comes through gentle guidance, consistency, and grace.

    5 Cs

At school, our staff are walking alongside children as they learn to care for themselves and their community through a thoughtful framework we call the 5 Cs: Cue, Clue, Clarify, Conference, and Contact. Each step reflects our belief that growth happens best in a safe, grace-filled environment. A gentle Cue or Clue helps children notice and redirect their choices; Clarify conversations guide them to reflect on how their actions impact others; Conferences build trust through one-on-one support; and Contact invites parents to partner in encouragement and understanding. These strategies nurture independence, empathy, and responsibility—skills that blossom when practiced both at school and at home. You might find opportunities to mirror these steps during family routines—offering gentle reminders, inviting reflection, or celebrating small moments of self-control and kindness together.

    Absences & Appointments

Please call the school office at 616.820.3505 or email the Pine Ridge Office any time before 8:30am to let us know each day your child will be absent. You may leave a voicemail any time and it will be checked in the morning when the office opens. Also, please note that we do have a 24-hour policy for any fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. For colds and coughs, please use your discretion as we know these things can linger.

Please inform the office of any appointments or early dismissal/late arrival information. That helps us make sure your student is ready for pickup or lets us know they are coming later and are accounted for. All students must be signed in and out if coming after class has started or before the last bell.

    Forest School Newsletter: November 2025

    Dear Forest Friends,

You may have noted these new plates on the side of Miss Rachel’s first grade cabin. These are well-placed to remind us of our values at Holland Christian Schools. You’ll find these descriptors at nearly every one of our campus buildings.

    • Discovery: Cultivating wonder and enriching faith through the lens of Scripture.
    • Discernment: Seeking God’s truth; practicing curiosity, courage and conviction as we engage culture.
    • Flourishing: Growing and serving as whole beings with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.
    • Hospitality: Receiving and giving grace; interacting with care and candor; building reciprocal relationships with our community.
    • Discipleship: Rooted in Jesus Christ; finding our identity, purpose and direction in Him.
    • Renewal: Through the power of the Holy Spirit, humbly participating in the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ.

I’m grateful to share just one of the many stories of Discovery in Forest School. Life in our Forest is ripe with opportunities to explore and discovery the goodness and greatness of our Creator.

One of our Forest Kindergarteners specializes at looking closely at small things. One morning, after the rain, she noticed something glinting under a shallow ripple. She reached her hand into the cool stream and lifted out a small, smooth pebble. It wasn’t much—just a gray stone—but when the sun hit it, a tiny rainbow shimmered across its surface.

Her teacher knelt beside her. “What do you see?”

The child held up the pebble and whispered, “It has light inside.”

The teacher smiled. “Sometimes God hides His goodness in little things, doesn’t He?”

Our Forest Kindergartener nodded, holding the pebble close. “I think He wanted me to find it.”

All morning, she carried the stone in her pocket. When she felt it there—cool and solid—she remembered the rainbow and thought about how God made beauty even in something so small.

That day, the forest seemed full of light: in raindrops on the moss, in the wings of a dragonfly, even in the smile of her teacher. This sweet child didn’t just discover a pebble—she discovered a reminder that God’s goodness glows quietly, waiting to be seen.

    With thanks,

    Miska

    Student Life and Discipleship (SLD)

Our Student Life and Discipleship initiative fosters positive community interactions while helping children identify their emotions and express their needs effectively. These foundational skills empower students to contribute meaningfully to their community and support their personal growth. We provide direct instruction in behavior expectations and intentionally celebrate success when demonstrated. Our first Pinning Ceremony recognized the accomplishments of all K–2 students and offered a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our growth together at Bella Vista Farms. We are eager to begin Quarter Two with continued momentum and joy.

    Parent Teacher Conferences

Thank for taking the time to come in and meet with your child’s teacher. We love partnering with you and helping your child thrive at school, at home and all the places in between!

    Thank You!

A sincere thank you to the Parent Board for providing delicious food to refuel teachers during parent/teacher conferences. These meals were greatly enjoyed and appreciated!

    Thanksgiving Break

There will be no school Wednesday, November 26-Friday, November 28 so families can celebrate Thanksgiving. Enjoy this special time together as a family celebrating our great God, and the many blessings in our lives.

    Dressing Appropriately for the Weather

This is the time of year where the weather changes so frequently its hard to keep up with. Please make sure your child has weather appropriate school each day–including snow gear and boots! Also, now is a good time to double check the extra clothes your child has to make sure they are weather appropriate (and still fit their quickly growing bodies!) If you have any questions about what your child has or needs, please reach out to their teacher.

    Late Arrival & Early Pick-Up

Please remember to let both the email the office and your child’s teacher know if your student is going to be late or leaving during our school day. Also, please make sure to sign your student in and out with our attendance form.
