High School Newsletter – October 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

This year’s theme, The Joy of the Lord, has been both a challenge and an invitation for us as a high school community. Psalm 16:11 reminds us that joy is not just a passing feeling, but rather a steady satisfaction that grows

when we walk in God’s presence. Each day, I see glimpses of that joy lived out in our classrooms, hallways, fields, courts, pools, and stages, and it has shown up in the way students encourage each other before a competition, laugh together at lunch, or take the time to include someone who might be feeling left out.

One of the clearest examples of joy this month was our House Olympics, which is led by Mr. Koeman, our champion for fun. The competitive spirit was strong. Whether students were riding an air mattress across the gym, pulling with all their strength in tug-of-war, or cheering so loudly their voices were hoarse, there was joy at every turn. Teachers and staff also joined in the fun, refereeing, cheering, and dressing in very spirited colors. It was a reminder that joy multiplies when it’s shared in the presence of others.

One of the key areas we have noticed the power of God’s presence is during chapel this year. During senior camp, this class expressed deep desires to follow Jesus not only during times of musical worship, but also in how they treat others this school year. In response, they set their guards down and praised God without thinking about what others thought about them. While these high moments at camp can tend to wane with time, this has not been the case for our students this year. I have seenmore students voluntarily come to the front to sing to God than I have these past four years, and more students have been actively participating than I have seen before.

While I love singing with these students, what has moved me the most so far this year has been the way students have practiced the joy of the Lord in their service and love for others. From service hours that bless our wider community to welcoming new people to their lunch tables, their actions have reminded me that the joy of the Lord isn’t meant to be kept to ourselves, but rather is expressed fully together. My prayer is that our homes and our school continue to be places where joy is evident, contagious, and life-giving as we follow Jesus together.

    With thanks,

    Miles Colago
    High School Principal

    Senior Meetings

We are currently meeting individually with each senior to make sure they have what they need to make decisions regarding next steps after high school. We are encouraging college-bound seniors to get their applications submitted by early November to have the best opportunities for scholarships and financial aid. We also assist non-college-bound seniors with career exploration, vocational opportunities, and job search skills.

    Scholarships

Throughout the school year, various scholarship opportunities will be posted online through the Counseling Department. A listing of outside scholarships, both regional and national, is updated as we receive notices of scholarships. The Community Foundation of Holland/Zeeland has a variety of scholarship opportunities for HC students. The CFHZ scholarship application opens in early December. Internal HC scholarships for full-time HC students are also available, and will be shared with students in late January. Check the Scholarship portion of the Counseling Page for more information.

    College Visits, Fairs & Activities

The counseling department website has a complete listing of colleges visiting HCHS. College representative visits are also listed in the daily announcements.

    Meeting with Juniors

We will be meeting with all juniors to talk about steps to take to prepare for both senior year and life after high school. We will also be offering the opportunity for parents to join with their student and his/her counselor for a junior + parent check-in meeting. Some of the information covered in the junior + parent meeting includes taking the ACT/SAT, preparing for senior year, and discussing future plans. Since this is an important and transitional time in your student’s life and you may have questions, too, we want to provide the option for parents to sit in on this meeting. Watch for more information to come about these meetings.

The family’s situation is complicated by the arrival of two gentlemen in their town: charming and wealthy Mr. Bingley, who instantly forms a crush on the eldest Bennet sister, and Mr. Darcy, his pompous and cold friend who becomes Elizabeth’s nemesis after a disastrous first encounter. As Bingley and Jane’s romance keeps pulling them into each other’s orbits, Elizabeth and Darcy find themselves sparring over their ideas of love, freedom and happiness. Their fiery exchanges and mutual disdain only seem to deepen, but underneath it all, something more complicated stirs. Can their intense animosity evolve into something deeper, or will their pride and prejudice tear them apart forever?  Shows will be held at 7pm on November 20, 21, and 22 with an additional matinee at 2pm on the 22rd. Tickets available soon!

High School Newsletter – September 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

Recently, I stepped outside for my morning jog in the dark and quickly turned around to put on a sweater—it’s hard to believe we’re already in September! Senior camp was an incredible time of worship, prayer, and community growth; fall athletics and theater have launched; and our classrooms are prepped and humming thanks to our teachers and summer maintenance team. Our mission of equipping minds and nurturing hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ certainly takes many minds and hearts to fulfill. But I am thankful for a good, loving God who rests his hand on this place and who started a good work in our students and “will carry it on to completion” (Phil. 1:6).

Over the last few months, our faculty and staff have been diving into our theme verse for the school year: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence is the fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Ps. 16:11). While there are several lessons that arise from this single verse, one part that recently struck me was the third clause, “at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” King David, as the author of this psalm, had many accomplishments that the world declares as sources of joy: wealth, recognition, and spouses. Nations typically want strong, successful kings in order to feel secure that they can maintain their way of life without the threat of outside forces who want to take what they have. What is amazing about David’s statement is that he appears to know that the throne he sat on was not the throne of the true King, the King of the universe.

Dallas Willard addressed this surrender of one’s kingdom in an essay he wrote in 2009, Serving The Jesus Way: Surrendering Our Kingdom to the God Who Is Enough. He explained how the collective understanding of the kingdom of God did not enter Judeo literature until teaching of Isaiah and the prophets appeared during the time of exile:

“When the Jews had nothing but desolation, they discovered there was a ‘God in Heaven’ who was present with them and very much in action even without the temple and royal palace in Jerusalem. That language about ‘God in Heaven’ emerges at the end of Second Chronicles and in Ezra and Nehemiah. Daniel displays most the understanding and language about the Kingdom of God. In Psalm 145 and the other later psalms, the idea emerges that when everything is desolate, there is still God. Job’s story is one of a man who lost everything but glorifies God. We have to learn this individually so that we come to understand that God is enough.”

Too often, our students and we can become trapped into thinking that we must establish our own kingdoms through more friends, more popularity, more accolades, or more money. Those who have inherited the belongings of family members who have passed away know they would trade those things in a second to be in the presence of their loved one again. In the same way, David, the psalmist, shows us that the person who could claim to have more of everything than anyone else in his kingdom counts it all as worthless compared to being in God’s presence. Willard explains that the reality of God’s kingdom and the gift of his presence is an incredibly freeing truth we can live within: “By turning over our kingdom into God’s kingdom, we are set free from the burden of controlling our world and our lives. Great freedom comes through the cross.” As we walk through this year together, I pray that our students may continue to work diligently “as unto the Lord and not for men” and without the pressure that their value or identity rests upon their performance. Rather, may they see it all as a gift and opportunity to love God and their neighbors better each day as free image-bearers of God.

    With thanks,

    Miles Colago, High School Principal

    Announcements

    Dress Code

Parents and students, we have spent a fair amount of time dealing with dress code issues in the first two weeks of school, especially with crop tops showing midriffs. Please take a moment as a family to read together the dress code policy listed below from our student handbook. Thank you for your cooperation:

In keeping with the mission of Holland Christian Schools, the Holland Christian School community recognizes the important impact of student dress on the learning environment. We understand that all of our lives, including our dress, bring honor or dishonor to our God. We also embrace our identity as a Christian school and how we dress impacts our witness for Christ to the world. While these principles impact our most basic commitments regarding dress there is more to which we would challenge the HC community.

    • No hats, hoods, earbuds, AirPods, or sunglasses are allowed during school hours. Teacher discretion may be used in class based on class activity.
    • Clothing or accessories depicting alcohol, tobacco, sexual or offensive language should not be worn at school.
    • Clothing and accessories that can be considered political or divisive in nature are not allowed, instead, Holland Christian is committed to providing venues for safe and meaningful discussion.
    • Shirts, shorts, and dresses must be modest and cover what they are supposed to cover.
    • The administration reserves the right to determine what constitutes appropriate dress. Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will not be allowed to attend class. Parents will be called if appropriate clothing is not available or the student refuses dress-code-appropriate clothing.

    Parking Permits

All students who drive to school are required to display a parking permit on their vehicle. They are available at no charge in the high school office.

    Security System at HCHS

Just a reminder that we have an intercom/buzz-in system at HCHS. All of the Holland Christian School campuses have such a system. The doors to the main high school entrance (Entrance A) are locked and you will need to press the intercom button located to the right of the doors to speak to one of the office personnel who will let you in. Parents may drop off items for their students in the office, and visitors who are going to be in the building must sign in the visitor log and wear a guest badge. Thanks for your cooperation with these important safety protocols.

    High School Daily Announcements

Announcements are also posted daily on the website.

    Student Handbook Updates

Parents and students, please take some time to read through the HCHS Student Handbook. Make sure you are familiar with the attendance policy and the personal technology policy.

    Student Medical Information and Forms

If your student has any medical situation that the school office should be aware of or has any medication that needs to be kept in the office, the appropriate forms need to be filled out each school year and kept on file in the office. Please make sure all information is current so that we can help keep your child safe and keep the necessary medications here. All the forms can be found on the Medical Information and Forms page of our website. If you have any questions please email Hendrina Cupery, manager of the Holland Hospital School Nurse Program.

    Parent Night

We will be hosting our annual Parent Night on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 6:30pm at the high school. This will be an opportunity for you to meet the HCHS staff and learn more about how we will live into our district mission of “Equipping Minds and Nurturing Hearts to Transform the World for Jesus Christ.” Parents will begin in the auditorium and follow their student’s “Friday Schedule” for the remainder of the evening. Please add this event to your calendar and make it a priority to attend.

    Senior Picture Information

Here are some details on senior pictures. The deadline for senior pictures is Monday, September 22, 2025.

    Counselors’ Corner

The 25-26 school year is off to a great start. We are committed to building relationships with our students and we look forward to connecting with each student individually over the course of this school year.

The counseling department assigns students to counselors alphabetically by last name:

    A – J: Mrs. Sara Christner

    K – Z: Mr. Dave DeBlecourt

    Information for Seniors

All seniors will have an individual check-in with their counselor in September or early October. Regardless of the desired outcome–career, college, or another option–we are here to help, support, and encourage seniors as they think about and plan for life after high school. Application timelines and due dates vary by school, so we encourage college-bound seniors to work toward completing and submitting applications by early November. This ensures maximum consideration for financial aid and scholarships, as well. We will assist non-college-bound seniors in the exploration of career options and help them find information on job and trade-specific training.

We held a “Planning for life after high school” session with all seniors on August 25 during Family Flex. In this session, we covered a timeline of things seniors can be doing throughout the school year, including the college application process. Seniors will also be invited to sign up for a Common Application workshop session coming up later this month.

All requests for transcripts are done through Parchment. Seniors were invited (via an email from Parchment) to complete their account set up in June and several times since then. Transcripts are only sent when a request is initiated through the student’s Parchment account. Questions about Parchment can be directed to the counseling office.

    Scholarships

Throughout the school year, various scholarship opportunities will be posted online through the Counseling Department portion of the website. A listing of outside scholarships, both regional and national, will be updated as we receive notices of scholarship opportunities. This will include scholarships available through Community Foundation of Holland/Zeeland that are open to Holland Christian students and also information about internal HC scholarships, which are available to full-time Holland Christian students only.

    College Representative Visits

We keep a listing of college reps holding visits at HCHS linked here, that can also be found on the Counseling Department page. This list grows throughout the fall.

    FAFSA Night

A college representative will be hosting a virtual workshop for HCHS parents on September 24th at 6pm to speak to parents about filling out the FAFSA and other financial aid opportunities. More details, including a link to the meeting, will be emailed out to parents of juniors and seniors.

    Testing Information

The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered during the school day on Friday, October 17, 2025 starting at 7:45 am for those who have signed up.  Juniors who wish to take the PSAT/NMSQT need to register and pay the $25 fee by Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 11:59 pm. Registration and payment for this is done on Total Registration.  All freshmen and sophomores will take the PSAT and Juniors will take the SAT during the school day on March 18, 2026. There will be no fee charged to students, and they will register through school.

    Athletics

Pay to participate for high school athletes is $100/season. We prefer families to pay the fee through their Final Forms account for their child. As an incentive to pay online, the fee is set to $96.15 so the total cost with fees is $100.

    High School Newsletter: August 2025

    Dear HCHS Community,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! As a faculty and staff we are full of gratitude and anticipation as we welcome both returning families and those joining us for the first time. It is a profound joy to continue the mission of equipping minds and nurturing hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ, and we are honored to partner with you in this sacred calling.

This year, we are excited to deepen our mission through several updates to our school: renovated industrial arts facilities, new equipment in our weight room, a continually growing international program, a strengthened commitment to rigorous academics and integrating faith in every classroom, and much more. As we continue cultivating the part of God’s garden entrusted to us, thank you for your faithful partnership.

Our spiritual theme for the school year is “The Joy of the Lord,” rooted in Psalm 16:11: “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

In a world brimming with noise and distraction, we believe true joy is found not in circumstances, but being in the presence of God. Under the leadership of Mr. Bryant Russ, HC’s Director of Faith Formation, we will explore how this joy can shape our HC community. We will reflect together in chapel, spiritual retreats, and small groups on how joy flows from God’s nearness (Zephaniah 3:17), leads us in practicing the way of Jesus, and gives us strength for each day (Nehemiah 8:10).

This kind of joy is not fleeting emotion, but a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), anchored in Christ who says, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11). Our prayer is that this joy will saturate every part of our community—from our worship to our learning, from our friendships to our work—so that all who enter may sense the gladness that comes from knowing and walking with Jesus.

We are also especially grateful for our incredible custodial and maintenance team, who have spent the summer deep cleaning every classroom and office, repairing and refreshing our spaces, and ensuring that our building is a welcoming and healthy environment for all. Please be sure to thank them personally upon your return. They are a vital part of the joy and excellence we seek to embody at HCHS.

We are also thankful to provide you with some exciting updates to our faculty and staff and welcome new members to the team:

    • Mr. Joe Brunson: Math Teacher
    • Ms. Taylor Byrne: Spanish Teacher
    • Mr. Clenon Fincher: Science Teacher
    • Mr. Ian Grell: English Teacher
    • Ms. Lisa Klamer: Athletic Administrative Assistant
    • Ms. Katherine Lamer: Math Teacher
    • Ms. Suzanne Rutherford: (Update) HC2 Secondary Schools Coordinator
    • Ms. Sarah Terpstra: English Teacher
    • Ms. Nona Westfall: (Update) Head Custodian

Throughout our hiring process, it was evident that each of these individuals is not only professionally gifted, but also deeply rooted in their faith and desire to serve Jesus through education. We are thrilled to welcome them and look forward to the ways they will enrich our school community.

Finally, as we prepare for the school year, we encourage you to carefully read this Back to School Newsletter to ensure a smooth and joyful start to the year.

Thank you for your ongoing support and your commitment to making Holland Christian a place where God is known, joy is present, and lives are transformed.

    With thanks,

    Miles Colago, HS principal

    Fall Musical: Pride and Prejudice!

This Fall, we are proud to present the brand new musical, Pride and Prejudice! Based on the beloved novel by Jane Austen, the story follows clever and headstrong Elizabeth Bennet and her family, who are facing mounting pressure to marry off five daughters before their estate is inherited by a distant cousin. The first day of auditions is Wednesday, August 20. Any interested students can sign up on the Pride and Prejudice audition form! If you have any questions about the musical or the audition process, please contact Mrs. Davis at jdavis@hollandchristian.org  We look forward to seeing you all in August!

High School Newsletter – June 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

Thank you for another incredible year of partnership in fulfilling our mission to equip minds and nurture hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ. It has been such a gift and privilege to be able to witness the significant growth each of your children made in the classroom and on the court, field, and stage. God has done amazing work in your children’s hearts and minds, and we are so excited to see what he has in store for them whether they are excelling to the next grade, moving on to college, or launching their careers.

This year’s theme has been to seek first the Kingdom of God, and one of the important lessons RVL gives his students each year is that God’s Kingdom is not established with a label or flag. Rather, his kingdom is the range of his effective will, where what he wants done is done, and this year our students displayed in countless ways a renewed desire to seek how to bring God’s Kingdom to bear within HC’s walls through the deepening of their discipleship to Jesus. As we step into the summer, our deep hope is that your families are able to rejuvenate from a full year and take time to practice a core discipline of Jesus: stillness and prayer. Jesus often would go off to a secret or solitary place to be with his Father (Mark 1:35, Luke 6:12, Luke 22:41), and I pray that your family may have ample opportunities to do likewise and reflect on all the ways God is moving in your lives and communities .

At this time of year, we also want to express our gratitude for the service of a few of our colleagues who will not be returning to the high school next year. With grateful hearts, we say farewell to Mr. Brian Lemmen (Math Teacher), Ms. Corry Vander Sluis (Spanish Teacher), Mr. Dale Eizenga (Science Teacher), Mr. Jason Oosting (History Teacher), Mr. Caleb Brink (English Teacher), Ms. Jen Bieri (Athletic Administrative Assistant), Mr. Bill Klokkert (Custodian), and Mr. Paul Klokkert (Facility Coordinator and Head Custodian). We cannot thank them enough for the love, time, and support that they have given to our students here at the high school. We are confident that God will bless them greatly as they move on to the next chapter in their lives.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers in serving these students and the community. May our Father continue to bless you and your families during this upcoming summer.

    With Thanks,

    Miles Colago, HS Principal

  • High School Newsletter: May 2025

    High School Newsletter: May 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

Welcome to May, arguably the most action-packed month of the school year. If you happen to be around the school grounds while the sun is shining from Monday to Saturday, you will see a Maroon either rehearsing for Dutch dancing in the parking lot, blocking Ottawa Ave with band instruments, running around the block, jumping over hurdles, or throwing, catching, hitting, or kicking some type of ball. During the spring season, HC has the most student participation in co-curricular activities than any other season, and seeing them shine in and out of the classroom is inspiring. All that being said, these opportunities for our students can only happen with the commitment and valuable time of our teachers, coaches, directors, and conductors, who pour themselves into our mission of equipping minds and nurturing hearts to transform the world distinctively for Jesus Christ. If you see any of them in action, please take a moment to give them a hearty thank you.

Our school theme this year has been to “seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness” (Matt. 6:33), and when revisiting the surrounding text, I was reminded that Jesus shared this exhortation within the context of not being anxious:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than them? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matt. 6:25, 26)

Personally, I used to struggle with this passage quite a bit. First, I like to plan and in most cases think it wise to have a plush rainy-day fund and insurance plan for worst case scenarios. Second, my wife just cleaned the windows of our house, and a beautiful, young variegated woodpecker flew into the spotless window and fell to its death. Needless to say, seeking God’s kingdom and his righteousness—as Jesus depicted in his teachings and through his life—does not mean that we are immune from the trials of this world. Rather, seeking God’s kingdom and his righteousness allows us to participate in the redemption and restoration Jesus was bringing into this broken world, emboldening his followers even more so with the hope of his resurrection from the dead.

During the month of May, worry can enter into our students and, if we’re being honest, us adults with all of the deadlines and final competitions coming our way. AP tests, final exams, projects, performances, competitions are closing in, and it’s easy to forget this important reality: Jesus rose from the dead. This does not mean that all of our efforts are meaningless and that we should take it easy, but rather Jesus’ love for us and victory over death should embolden us to participate with even more thankful vigor, “working as unto the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23). This allows us to try our best at anything, and possibly fail, without that fear of losing Jesus’ love for us. This allows us to change life trajectories if we don’t get into our desired college or job because our identities are not dependent on what we do, but rather we are defined by God’s love for us as his children and image-bearers. As we enter into this exciting season, our deep hope remains that your children may become resilient followers of Jesus who are equipped to do what God desires for them in this world, and we could not be more thankful for the privilege to partner with you as we seek first God’s kingdom in Holland together.

    With thanks,

    Miles

    Athletic Department

Registration on Final Forms for the 25-26 school year begins on April 1, 2025. The athletic department requires a pre-participation physical dated after April 15, 2025, to participate in school sports for the 25-26 school year. Athletes will not be allowed to participate in tryouts until a current physical form is on file with the athletic department. If you have any questions please contact the HCHS athletic department.

    • All families with 6th-12th grade potential athletes need to be registered with our online registration system Final Forms. For those already registered for the current year, you simply need to login, select the sports your child is interested in and update any changes to your and your child’s information. This is also the place where you print the updated 25-26 physical form to take with you to your DO/MD/NP/PA appointment and have that individual sign the form.
    • For complete information about all athletic opportunities at Holland Christian, please take a look at the Athletic Opportunities page
    • For information specifically about Summer camps, go to the Summer Camps page.

    Athletic Physicals

Holland Christian encourages every child to see their primary care physician for their well child visit, but also understands the annual MHSAA pre-participation sports physical requirement does not always align with insurance requirements.  Holland Christian’s sports physical night offers a low cost visit that meets the MHSAA requirements, but it is not an alternative to an annual well child visit.  Regardless of where the MHSAA physical is performed, it must be completed by a MD, DO, NP or PA who will check for significant medical concerns that could arise through participation in sports.  The MHSAA physical form must be completed between April 15 and the first practice/try-out for a student to participate in any in-season sport.

For spring 2025, the Holland Hospital & Shoreline Orthopedic Sports Medicine are collectively offering a second evening for all partner schools, including HCHS, on May 15 at Shoreline Orthopaedic in ZEELAND from 6-8:30pm. Families can register for a physical slot at maroonsathletics.org/Registrations. Holland Christian has 15 available slots every 15 minutes on both evenings.

    Important Athletic Dates

    • Final Forms registration opens for the 25-26 school year on April 1, 2025
    • MHSAA Dead Week: June 30 – July 6  (no team activities or use of facilities)
    • MHSAA Fall Sports Pre-Season Downtime: August 1-10 (limited activities for fall teams)

    High School Newsletter: April 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

Welcome to April and to the spring season! In a few years, I will have spent the majority of my life in west Michigan, which has allowed for me to have an increased appreciation for the sun and the end of winter. As a Minnesotan, little did I know when choosing to attend Calvin College that I would experience cloud cover for more than half the year and start looking at weather forecasts in anticipation for the next sunny day. Today, after experiencing Tulip Time and living here for more than a decade, I understand the urge to dance in the streets while being surrounded by colorful tulips and blossoming gardens.

One of my favorite depictions of Jesus comes from the book of John when Mary Magdalene is at the empty tomb and mistakes Jesus for the gardener (John 20:15). This is a curious scene and begs many questions: What was Jesus doing to give Mary the impression that he was the gardener? Was he actually tending to the plants surrounding the tomb with a shovel, hoe, or watering can? This depiction of Jesus has been the subject of artists for centuries, but what this scene beautifully brings to mind is that God once again was caught “walking in the garden in the cool of the day” and his people, instead of hiding their faces in shame, can once again dwell in his presence, tears and all (Gen. 3.8).

This year our theme has been to seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness. As we move into this spring season, one of our deep hopes is that our students may be reinvigorated to participate in the eternal things that God originally designed for us and our flourishing. We were designed to tend to the garden and feel the joy of producing fruit from the work of our hands (Gen. 2:15); we were designed to discover and assign names to God’s creatures and steward them (Gen. 1:26, Gen. 2:19); as male and female, we were designed to increase and multiply and build communities (Gen. 1:28); and most importantly, we were designed to dwell with the Gardner, be in his presence, and see him face to face (Gen. 3:8, Job 33:26). May our students and we not get caught up into a culture that encourages us to accomplish as much as we can before we die, but rather may we get caught up into the incredible love of Jesus, the life made full in following him, and the hope that his resurrection gives to the world.

Thank you once again for your partnership in transforming the world distinctively for Jesus through the discipleship and equipping of each and every student into Christ’s likeness (2 Cor 3:18).

    With Thanks,

    Miles Colago

For spring 2025, the Holland Hospital & Shoreline Orthopedic Sports Medicine Collaborative schools are collectively offering two evenings for all partner schools on April 16 at South Washington Family Medicine from 6-8:30pm and May 15 at Shoreline Orthopaedic ZEELAND from 6-8:30pm.

    College Visits

We encourage juniors to begin exploring specific colleges. Students are allowed two school-related absences per semester for college visits provided certain criteria are met. School-related absence means the absence does not count toward the ten absences allowed. There is a form that the student must fill out, and it must be completed and signed by the college official and returned to the high school office in order for the absence to be cleared. college visit permission form is available in the high school office and the counseling office. We hope this helps encourage students to explore college/career options without worrying about accruing too many absences. Please note that parents do need to call in the absence ahead of time. Once the completed form is turned in to the office, the absence will get coded as a college visit and will not count against the student.

  • High School Newsletter: March 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

Welcome to March and the introduction to the season of Lent. Before I moved to West Michigan, the launch of Lent typically began with an evening Ash Wednesday service; however, after breaking the ice with a few folks who grew up here, they introduced me to Michigan’s official start to the season: eating a paczki. I’ll always remember the first time I participated in this sacred Michigan ritual and made the mistake of eating more than one within five minutes. After more than ten years of participating in this tradition, the cravings have subsided, but the inertia of cultural obligations has kept me a consistent participant.

Annual traditions and rhythms can often dull the senses that were sparked during a first experience of anything. Early in my career, I decided, maybe mistakenly, to teach Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey to my grade 9 and 10 students. I had read and taught it for quite some time, so it was always refreshing to witness their first experience with these stories. Every year they would make the observation that the gods within these ancient texts from the 8th century BC acted and spoke very immaturely and seemed to cause drama at the cost of humans because they were simply bored, having lived forever and had no first experiences to look forward to. Eternity almost seemed like a punishment for them.

Human beings in these ancient Greek stories, on the other hand, desired to live forever like the gods, but their only mechanism to do so was to be remembered. In The Iliad, the warrior Achilles wrestles between these two options: being remembered yet dying young in battle or being forgotten yet living a quiet, peaceful life. He ultimately chooses neither and seeks, instead, vengeance after his friend is killed in battle, which leaves him in Hades, the mythological location in which all deceased people reside. Eternity has been on the hearts and minds of people since the fall, and for the Ancient Greek and Roman, Hades was the eternal reality that awaited mortals no matter what they achieved in life, leaving many hopeless.

Lent offers us an important reminder that Jesus shattered the hopelessness embedded in surrounding culture with declarations like this: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world,” (John 6:51) and “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25). Even though Jesus repeatedly testified to this message, the beautiful reality of God’s outpouring, self-sacrificial love for us did not sink in until he laid down his life, rose from the dead, and returned to those who abandoned him. He made the inaccessible accessible and tasked his disciples to spread the good news that his Kingdom was at hand.

Dallas Willard put it like this in The Divine Conspiracy:

Eternity is not something waiting to happen, something that will commence later. It is now here. Time runs its course within eternity. With the coming of Jesus it was not only here, as it had always been, but was directly and interactively accessible to every one of the Israelites, no matter what their standing in life or what they had or had not done—to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” They did not have to be among the glitterati, the humanly blessed. All they had to do was to trust this man Jesus as the one anointed to bring God personally into human history and therefore the Lord of that history. This message of the present availability of God’s rule to everyone was to be announced, or “preached.” Jesus did that, and soon he sent his disciples to do the same thing. And once the foundation had been historically laid in flesh-and-blood Jews, historically prepared for that purpose, it was to be preached to all “nations.”

As we enter this Lenten season, may this time be one of remembrance that the Lord of Heaven and Earth deeply loves his image-bearers and desires for us to return to the Garden, which is his presence. At Holland Christian, our desire is for each student to transform the world for Jesus by first becoming his disciples, “being transformed into his image with every-increasing glory” (I Cor. 3:18). Thank you for your continued partnership in establishing the Kingdom of God in your homes, our school, and our city, making them places where what God wants done is done.

    With Thanks,

    Miles

    Senior Exam Exemption Policy Reminder

During the second semester, seniors may work towards being exempt from their final exams. To earn this exemption seniors must meet at least one of the following:

    • Have a B average in the course for which there is an exam through the final day of that course;
    • Have handed in all homework on time with a passing grade, and have no more than two days absent in that course for the whole semester (for any reason except “school activity.”)

PSAT & SAT for HCHS Students

On Wednesday, March 19 at 8:30am at HCHS, 9th graders will be taking the PSAT 8/9, 10th graders the PSAT 10, and 11th graders the SAT. The PSAT and SAT showcase the classroom skills and knowledge that are essential for college and career readiness. In addition, this benchmark data helps Holland Christian to continuously improve its strong approach towards academic excellence. Students will be dismissed when the testing is finished, approximately 11:30am (no cafeteria services that day). Seniors do not need to attend school on March 19. Tech Center is required for seniors, but juniors will be excused from Tech Center due to the testing.

• For complete information about all athletic opportunities at Holland Christian, please take a look at the Athletic Opportunities page
    • For information specifically about Summer camps, go to the Summer Camps page.

    Athletic Physical Nights

We encourage every child to see their PCP for their well-child visit, but also understand that MHSAA pre-participation sports physical requirements do not always align with the annual well child visit with your physician due to insurance requirements. It is beneficial to see your PCP as they know your previous history and can note any oddities, but MHSAA requires that physicals must be dated after April 15.

Sports physicals through the school allow a way to fulfill the MHSAA requirements when insurance does not cover an additional physical. We will be holding Athletic Physical Nights on April 16 and May 15.  More detailed information to follow!

Please note: Any parents willing to volunteer their time as any of the following: Physician, nurse, PT, expert crowd control or healthcare professional, please email HC’s athletic trainer, Karianne.

High School Newsletter – February 2025

    Dear HCHS Families,

Welcome to February and the start of the second semester! After a week of exams and three consecutive snow days, this semester began with much enthusiasm to get back into the classroom and re-enter the natural rhythm of a school schedule. Other than parents of elementary students, no one was more excited for the start of the semester than RVL, who has been eager to reignite the lecture hall with his Discipleship class. It’s wonderful to hear his distinct voice out on Main Street once again. Recently, a few colleagues and I overheard RVL yelling in his class, “Who are you? What are you doingBa here?” Just to be clear, this was part of a deeply meaningful lesson and not a reprimand of a student walking into his class late. In another context, RVL provided a great devotional study on these fundamental questions in his signature light blue vented long sleeve shirt, and in it he encourages us to engage with Isaiah 43:8-12 and examine how we also are to live as God’s witnesses through our words and actions.

As a Christian school community, we must ask ourselves these same two questions. In the first century, most likely starting with the Catechetical School of Alexandria, which opened 20 years after Jesus’s ascension, the primary focus of Christian schools was to produce resilient followers of Jesus who loved God, embodied Jesus’s teachings, and were equipped to serve God and their neighbors in whatever capacity He desired from them. This holistic approach to education is why I appreciate the powerful simplicity of our mission statement: equipping minds and nurturing hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ. First and second-century discipleship transformed the world for Jesus in ways well beyond how we count the years, and the need to produce resilient followers of Jesus today has become ever more urgent.

In 2023, Barna research Group found that only 20 percent of self-identified U.S. Christians meet Barna’s definition of a “resilient disciple”: Christians who 1) attend church at least monthly and engage with church more than just attending worship services; 2) trust firmly in the authority of the Bible; 3) are committed to Jesus personally and affirm he was crucified and raised from the dead to conquer sin and death; and 4) express desire to transform the broader society as an outcome of their faith. In 2019, Barna asked U.S. Christians in their twenties these same four questions, and only 10% met the definition of resilient disciple.

As a father of four children under the age of eight, these statistics were intimidating when thinking about how my wife and I might counteract this trend in our own home. One resource I deeply appreciated was Pastor Jon Tyson’s The Intentional Father, which utilizes much of the data gathered by Barna. One clarification that he makes is that the title of the book is not called “The Perfect Father.” Rather, Pastor Tyson simply encourages parents to take a few moments to develop a plan, as they might in their own professional work, and think strategically about how they can raise their children to be resilient followers of Jesus. His simple, achievable approach is part of the catalyst for reinstituting the Public Reading of Scripture gatherings on Tuesday mornings and lunches for any students or staff and a new Just Show Up book club focused on discipleship. These are no-homework opportunities for students to participate in and learn about a few of the core disciplines of the early church.

As a school community, we are so thankful for the opportunity to partner with you in this critical venture, and we look forward to the opportunity to see you once again in person at parent-teacher conferences to pause and reflect on our joint effort in the academic and spiritual formation of the children God has entrusted to you. To this end, while we see academic progress as important, here are a few other questions we encourage you to ask: Are they treating their neighbors with hospitality (Rom. 12:13)? Are they showing honor to others (Rom. 12:10)? Are they being patient in tribulation or challenges they face (Rom. 12:12)? Are they associating with the lowly instead of the proud (Rom. 12:16)? Are they feeding their enemies if they’re hungry and giving them something to drink (Rom. 12:20)?

As we pursue the fulfillment of our mission to equip minds and nurture hearts to transform the world for Jesus, may we be reminded that the transformation of the world came about through the transformation of imperfect people as they walked in the dust of the Good Shepherd and loved their fellow image-bearers with what they had as the Lord originally intended.

    With thanks,
    Miles Colago
    High School Principal

MIFA Home Benefit: The Trojan Women

All family, friends, and community members are invited to our MIFA Home Benefit show of The Trojan Women on Tuesday, February 18 from 6-7pm. This winter, our theater team is partnering with Bethany Christian Services, specifically their Refugee Foster program. Every year, hundreds of children arrive alone in the United States as refugees of warfare, famine, or political violence. Many of them have become separated from their families as they fled. BCS works to place these children in safe and loving temporary homes where they will be provided for as BCS works to reunite them with their families.

Instead of charging admission for our Home Benefit, we are asking our audience to consider donating to Bethany Christian Services to help this program. There will be more information about the refugee foster program at the show on the 18th. We would love to see all of you there! If you have any questions, please contact Jill Davis.

    Calvin Symposium Worship Service

    Seniors & Parents of Seniors

Just a reminder that if you have improved your ACT/SAT scores and would like your intended college/university to have these scores, you must have your updated scores sent directly from your ACT or SAT student account. Your HC transcript does not list or include test scores. If you did not put down the 4 digit codes for the college(s) you wish to receive your test scores when you registered for the SAT/ACT, you can log into your account and request that your new scores be sent. There is a fee to send additional scores.

Likewise, some schools require a mid-year transcript through the Common Application. If your school(s) don’t require this, but you would like to send your updated transcript at the end of semester one, please log in to your Parchment account and request a transcript.

If you have questions, please contact your counselor.

    Scholarships

It is very important for seniors to regularly check their email and to read the daily announcements, as information about scholarship opportunities and deadlines is communicated via both.

    High School Newsletter: November 2024

    Dear HCHS Community,

Welcome to November! As I write this letter, it is late October and 70 degrees outside with gusty winds, not quite the frigid, frost-covered introduction to the Christmas season that I grew accustomed to in Minnesota. In many ways, the month of November launches a season of great anticipation for a change in seasons and for opportunities to gather with family around large meals, cold family football games, and road trip playlists. Before we get too ahead of ourselves, however, I pray that you may take time to reflect on all of the ways that God has been moving in this community since late August.

Students have been hard at work in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, in the rehearsal room, and on the court, and their focused effort has paid off in beautiful ways. We all enjoy the victories and world-class performances, but the most awe-striking moments that have stayed with me include the immediate prayers of thanksgiving after winning a close game and the testimonies of our opponents saying that our students were the kindest, most respectful team they have played all season. Under the leadership of our teachers, coaches, conductors, and directors, our students have been engaging with God’s world with excellence and thanksgiving.

Recently, HC leadership, in partnership with parents, held HC’s first Parent University gathering for parents and fellow educators concerning challenges that our kids face today and how we might be able to partner together to create an environment conducive to human flourishing. While the research on teen health is alarming, the collective support for taking measures on the home-front to respond was very encouraging. As we seek to equip minds and nurture hearts within our students, we are starting to acknowledge the need to push back against the cultural inertia of our time. One of these pressures is the cultural phenomenon, hurry, which Dallas Willard labeled as “the great threat to spirituality and the way of Jesus in our day.” In an era of social comparison and intense competition, the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—continue to be as counter-cultural as ever.

Brother Lawrence called the Practice of the Presence of God the “schooling of the soul to find its joy in [God’s] divine companionship.” While he clarifies that he is not counseling his readers “to disregard completely and forever the outward things that are around us,” he does emphasize the importance of participating in this “practice of ceasing […] to worship God in the depth of their soul, to enjoy the peace of brief communion with Him.”

During this season of Thanksgiving and the grind of another Michigan winter, I pray that you may find time to participate in the practice of the presence of God, remembering to whom all of our work belongs and in whom we live, move, and have our being: Jesus, our Savior and Lord. Thank you for your continued partnership in equipping our students’ minds and nurturing their hearts to transform the world distinctively for Jesus.

    With thanks,

    Miles

    Decisions for Seniors

We have met with each senior individually to make sure they are on track with their post-high school planning and all that comes with it. Our encouragement to college bound seniors is to get their applications done soon in order to have the best opportunities for financial aid and scholarships. We also assist non-college bound seniors with career exploration, vocational opportunities, and job search skills.

Many colleges are SAT/ACT test-optional for acceptance, so testing may not be a requirement for acceptance. Some colleges are test-optional regarding scholarships as well. Students should check with individual colleges to determine if an ACT or SAT score is needed for merit-based scholarships. If scores are needed, the student should request them through their CollegeBoard or ACT student account.

When in doubt, it is best to connect with the admissions and/or financial aid office of the college(s) you are considering to get the most accurate information on admissions policies, scholarships, financial aid, and specific programs/opportunities.

    • Step 1: Register and pay for the test through Total Registration online at www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/231965.
    • Step 2: Join your teacher’s AP Classroom and indicate you are interested in taking the AP test (many students have already done this with their teacher in class).
    • Both steps need to be completed by Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, at 11:59pm. The cost of each exam is $105, which can be paid online or by check. If you have questions contact Alison Silva in the HCHS office.

    Meeting with Juniors/Parents

We will meet with the juniors on November 6 to talk about planning and preparing for senior year and life after high school. We will also be offering the opportunity for parents to join their student and his/her counselor for a junior + parents check-in meeting. Some of the information covered in the junior meeting will be taking the ACT/SAT, preparing for senior year, and discussing plans for life after high school. Since this is an important and transitional time in your student’s life, we want parents to have the option to sit in on this meeting. If a junior + parents meeting doesn’t work for you, we will still meet individually with each junior. Watch your email in the coming weeks for more information about these meetings.

Singin’ in the Rain Musical Performance Dates

This fall, Holland Christian Theater is producing Singing in the Rain! In the glittering Hollywood of 1927, silent movie star Don Lockwood appears to be on top of the world. His charisma and intense on-screen chemistry with his gorgeous co-star, Lina Lamont, has made them both household names, as well as one of the tabloids’ favorite couples. However, the arrival of The Jazz Singer, the first “talking picture” of the ’20s, threatens to upset everything. Don can dance and sing, but Lina … well, Lina is a silent movie star for a reason. As the studio struggles to adapt to the new “talkies,” Don meets Kathy Seldon, a feisty young actress who may prove to be their salvation – as well as possibly the first person who sees beyond his fame and likes him for the person he really is. But Lina is as possessive as she is pretty, and her jealousy just might doom everyone. Anchored by witty dialogue, catchy songs, and playful choreography, Singin’ in the Rain is a joyful American classic and a comedic adventure for the whole family. Shows will be held at 7pm on November 21, 22, and 23, with an additional matinee at 2pm on the 23rd. Tickets are available on the Holland Christian Theater website.

High School Newsletter – October 2024

    Dear HCHS Community,

Welcome to October and to the fall season! It’s time to break out the flannel, vest, and jeans and crack open a pumpkin spice latte because the cozy months are heading our way. This time of the year always brings to mind some of my favorite childhood memories—corn mazes, apple-picking, Reformation Day 5Ks, hot cider, and the soft sound of rain hitting the roof. In the life of the school, this month also brings with it the culminating performances of our student athletes, musicians, thespians, and academics, and we are so thankful for the auspicious start that our students have had in taking small, diligent steps toward equipping their minds and nurturing their hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ.

As a Minnesotan who experienced consistent sub-zero temperatures each year, I sometimes saw fall and winter as periods I simply had to endure until spring came. I would awake at five o’clock in the morning to warm up my car, be at school for weightlifting at six, attend a full-day of school, go to basketball practice, and arrive home after sunset. Sunshine was a gift not to be wasted on the weekends. Today, I view this time as an invaluable stage of the year for slow and steady transformation to take place as we seek to form resilient followers of Jesus.

During the grade 9 retreat at Camp Geneva, we shared with students the beauty of Jesus’ life and the invitation he made to us to participate in his Kingdom of God right now. Core to this invitation was Jesus’ call for us to love God and our neighbor, and while we know this command to be true and good, disciples of Jesus for millennia have realized the need for training their heart, soul, mind, and strength in order to put it into practice.

In Dante’s Purgatorio, written in 1321 A.D., he captured this medieval church understanding that ridding oneself of sinful tendencies, like pride, envy, or wrath, took effort. In Dante’s fictional world, if envy were a problem, maybe you would lose your sight for a few hundred years until you lost the desire for your neighbor’s possessions; if wrath were an issue, then you might need to learn meekness by walking through a dark cloud and depending on others to guide you through it. As members of the protestant tradition, we do not subscribe to the existence of purgatory; however, as Dr. Willard pointed out, “Grace is not opposed to effort. It’s opposed to earning.” Jesus paid it all, and in response to this incredible reality, we have the gift of being with Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and doing as he did while daily surrendering our kingdoms for his Kingdom.

This past summer I had a chance to read Jonathan Haidt’s latest book, The Anxious Generation, and after reading and seeing the evidence presented within it, it became clear that if we are to pursue our mission of equipping minds and nurturing our hearts, we should pay attention to how the tools students use each day are shaping the minds and hearts of our students. Given the staggering ties between increased smartphone usage and the academic and mental health decline in young people, Haidt recommends that parents not give smartphones to their children before high school and delay access to social media for as long as possible, but at least not before age 16. As partners in the education and formation of your children, we thank you for your continued support of our personal technology initiatives and gently leave Haidt’s recommendation with you for your consideration. Ultimately, our hope is that your children can have “life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10), and this counter-cultural recommendation might just be a helpful step for this generation to amplify God’s desire for them over their own.

As we move further into this school year, we are reminded of the unique opportunity we have to shape hearts and minds in ways that align with the life and teachings of Jesus, and we are grateful for your partnership in this journey. Together, let’s continue to equip our students to live abundantly in Jesus, cultivate their love for God and others, and transform the world for His Kingdom.

    With Thanks,

    Miles Colago, HS Principal

    Counselors Corner

    Testing Information

This year AP exam registration and payment will be done in the fall by Nov. 12, 2024. It is a two-step process, so be sure to complete both steps to register to take an AP test:

Step 1: Register and pay for the test through Total Registration.

Step 2: Join your teacher’s AP Classroom and indicate you are interested in taking the AP test (many students have already done this with their teacher in class).

Both steps need to be completed by Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, at 11:59pm. The cost of each exam is $105, which can be paid online or by check. If you have questions contact Alison Silva, asilva@hollandchristian.org, in the High School office.

Tickets available soon!
